Healing Country had an amazing time celebrating and honouring our Elders for National NAIDOC Week 2023.
The week began with a NAIDOC themed morning tea hosted by CRC TiME. We shared some thoughtful yarns about our Elders and the guidance of their knowledge and experiences. Thank you to the team at CRC TiME for having us.
We then attended a NAIDOC week symposium hosted by the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) and The Centre for Aboriginal Studies at Curtin University. The day began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony from Aunty Vivienne and Uncle Mort Hansen, followed by songs and dance performed by Uncle James Kearing and Djurpin Djindas. We then saw presentations which centred First Nations Elders and researchers in themes covering education, health, and the justice system. A highlight of the day were Yarning circles facilitated by Dr Carol Dowling and Dr Jocelyn Jones, which opened the floor for Elders to share their perspectives and provide a priceless opportunity for us to listen and learn.
Our last event of NAIDOC Week 2023 took place in the amphitheatre of Yagan Square. We were immersed in First Nation’s culture through a Welcome to Country and Smoking ceremony, followed by live performances from the Milla Mukrem dancers, Lilly Gogos and workshops with weaving and painting. Thank you to Yagan Square and DevelopmentWA for such an awesome event for all ages.
Thank you to all event organisers over NAIDOC week 2023, and a very special thank you to all Elders across every generation, who give us strength through their love, knowledge, and leadership.
